DYF Parents

A parenting approach that includes you, as well as your child

Realistic and generous strategies and support to help you and your children grow and learn.

WHAT YOU'LL FIND HERE

Parenting is hard enough, but when you're questioning yourself constantly, wondering if you're too soft, too strict, too tired, too emotional, or even too affected by what everyone else thinks, it can start to undermine every parenting decision you make.

It's not that you don't care enough, aren't trying hard enough, or haven't found the right strategy yet. More often, you've become separated from your own judgement.

My work helps you rebuild trust in your own ability to understand your child, weigh up competing needs, and make decisions you can stand behind. The result isn't perfect parenting. It's becoming a steadier, more confident parent in the middle of real life.

Parenting gets complicated when you know how you want to respond, but still struggle to stay calm or consistent when your children most need it.

Even though you love your child, and probably understand quite a lot about what they need,

that doesn't necessarily help when they're refusing to leave the house, melting down over a broken toy, shouting at their sibling, or clinging when you need to get to work.

Unfortunately, when your child falls apart and you've already run out of patience, it's extremely easy to end up reacting. Maybe you snap, insist anyway, over-explain, or resentfully give in. But then afterwards, when everything is quieter, you feel guilty and wish you'd handled it differently.

While it can be easy to blame yourself or blame your child, sometimes your child really is struggling, and their behaviour can be challenging at the same time. If you're also overwhelmed, under pressure, or taken by surprise, you might not want to react, but it's understandable when you do.

My work helps you understand what happens in those moments, so you can recognise when you're reacting sooner, figure out what's happening for your child, and find ways of responding that actually work for your family.

WHY THIS MATTERS

“I just want to enjoy parenting again.”

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking this, you’re not the only one. The truth is, you’re likely doing far more right than you realise. Unfortunately, the conflicting realities of parenting can cause a huge amount of stress and you can often be left feeling like you’re getting it all wrong. This hurts more, precisely because your children matter so much to you.

I offer realistic and generous strategies and insights to help you feel more like you again, so you can start to confidently enjoy the beautiful, messy magic of family life.

Sigh-to-Snap Spotter

Start with what's happening now

Why do you react the way you do when parenting gets difficult?

My free Sigh-to-Snap Spotter helps you recognise the ways you automatically react when the pressure builds. When you know your default patterns, it becomes easier to notice and begin to interrupt those reactions before you do something you later regret.

Soften The Storm

Learn what to do differently

Understanding how you typically react under stress is useful, but eventually you need to know what to do when your child is upset and you're becoming overwhelmed. Especially when the way your child is behaving or the way you try to deal with it leaves you feeling frustrated, confused, or guilty afterwards.

Soften The Storm teaches the parenting skills underneath those moments.

You'll explore what's going on for both your child and yourself, and understand how you can both accidentally set each other off.

You'll discover how to keep this understanding in mind so you can respond more easily to your child without losing your cool or needing them to stop crying.

You'll learn how to make things better when things go wrong, and what you need to practise until different responses become easier to access in real life.

This isn't a formula for perfect parenting. It's a set of skills you can actually develop.

Responsive Parent Coaching

When the situation needs more than a course

Some situations are too complicated for general advice.

You might have read lots of books and online information, but even though you understand the ideas, it's still really hard to put them into practise when things get difficult. This is especially true if the same situations keep happening, or there are additional needs, sensitivity, family pressures or relationship dynamics that make generic parenting advice feel hopelessly inadequate.

In Responsive Parent Coaching, we work with what's actually happening in your family.

Using your unique knowledge of your child, we look together at what these situations are like for both your child and for you, identifying anything that might be causing either of you any extra pressure. We explore the relationship between you and your child, how it's been, how you'd like it to be, and figure out what specifically would help you both.

The aim isn't to make you dependent on more advice.

It's to help you develop your own judgement.

Read DYF Parents on Substack

There are very few neat conclusions in parenting. Every week on Substack, I write about the complicated bits: difficult mornings, family decisions, losing your temper, apologising, challenging behaviour, your children's friendships, and what it actually takes to put good intentions into practice.

You can read the free weekly posts, or become a paid subscriber for additional teaching and deeper practical support.

ABOUT DYF PARENTS

I'm Emma Reed, an NCPS Accredited Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, parent coach and mum.

I've spent more than a decade supporting people therapeutically and have worked with over 300 families through counselling and direct family-support settings. What interests me most isn't telling parents the “right” way to parent, it's understanding what happens between a parent and child when things get difficult, and helping parents develop the understanding, skills and confidence to make decisions they can actually stand by.

DYF Parents is the online branch of Dream Your Future Families CIC, the social enterprise I co-founded in 2019 to support parents and families.

You don't need another hundred parenting tips.

You need to be able to notice when the pressure's rising, understand what's important in that particular situation, and have enough mental space to feel more confident you can choose what to do next.

Start by finding out what happens to you when parenting gets difficult.
